Who Chooses the ALTAI?
ALTAI a superb kit for teams of 8-12 and for those smaller teams that are travelling in extreme conditions (both poles, ocean cruising, high altitude locations, military operations, etc.). ALTAI is the favorite kit of doctors who make their rounds along remote country roads and with those who do medical humanitarian work in the Third World. Many working groups, whose destinations take them far afield, have found the supplies in ALTAI have helped both their team, as well as native people and other professionals in their midst. We highly recommend that you augment ALTAI with prescription medications – for pain, infection, eye infection, etc. – and have a proven evacuation plan in place for your party. We can recommend reliable suppliers of both.

- Yes, ALTAI has loops which can accommodate several medication bottles.
- Since the ALTAI bag is cut with some give to it, our clients have been able to fit a number of their own things into the kit. Note that these extra items are not held down with elastic straps, but are loosely carried in one of the kit’s two main compartments. Here is a partial list of items that have been put into an ALTAI kit bag by our clients: wool blanket, rain poncho, blood pressure cuff and stethoscope, digital thermometer, and emergency food.
Wow, This Kit Is Big…
ALTAI has supplies generally sufficient to take care of 8-12 or more people for about 30-60 days. This means that ALTAI has to be a pretty heavy and bulky kit. When you realize that one bad laceration can wipe out all of your bandaging supplies at once, it is understandable why ALTAI needs to have so much in it. The good news is that emergencies don’t usually happen. The bad news is you have to be prudent and prepared for one. We recommend that each member of your travelling party have their own MAYFLY kit which can be resupplied out of the ALTAI. The ALTAI can then be placed in a central location and accessible to the whole party.

We brought our new Altai kit rafting on the San Juan River a couple of weeks ago on a 6-day, 5-night trip. We had a group of 15 pax (including 5 kids under 5 years old) and 5 boats. We accessed the kit 4 times (thankfully) for very minor things like scrapes and abrasions, eyewash for sunscreen in the eyes, and insect sting bites. I was especially impressed with the index card on the outside of the kit and how well everything was organized, labeled, and easily accessible. My rafting buddies were impressed as well and were happy that it looked like we had pretty much what we might need in case of a major incident.
The kit has been excellent; both at work and in the field. I’ll try and get some photos for you. The kit, combined with my emergency doctor’s bag is enough to deal with almost all emergencies.
Loved how the kits came back. We have 3 kits all together and they are worth every penny. Whatever you did to them… they are just like new. Feel very confident sending them into the (African) bush with the family. We gave one of our kits to our guide last time as he was just in awe of how well it was organized and you had everything in clear view in case of an emergency and that is what you want. We also signed up for Global Rescue for this trip. Thanks for all your help. Say hello to your family.
In preparation for my 3,500 mile unsupported trans-Atlantic rowing expedition, I approached Wilderness Medical with a tall order — design a kit to meet the emergency medical needs of a single adventurer 1,500 miles from land and weeks from the nearest hospital, and make it small enough to fit in an already-cramped, 19-foot row boat. In no time, I had a customized Altai kit in a well-organized and compact bag that allowed me to find everything I needed even while seasick in 30-foot seas. I even used the kit as a pillow for many of the 87 nights I spent on the Atlantic.
“I was extremely impressed with the quality of the bag and the contents. Everything is easy to find because each bag of materials or tools is secured in place. It was very easy to get the custom contents I wanted.” Have not had the call to use it yet, thankfully. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the bag and the contents. Everything is easy to find because each bag of materials or tools is secured in place. It was very easy to get the custom contents I wanted. Response was swift and accurate.
We used our kit in Haiti and it was a GODSEND! Great organization and well thought out supplies made our work easier.
Here is a photo of my Wilderness Medical Systems kit where it belongs, in the safari car. I’ve used it on 3 continents now and won’t go without it. It’s stuffed full of extras. RX and OTC meds particularly useful and always needed. I had a friend’s PH back go out and I gave him a course of prednisone and fixed him up. On the same hunt one of the other hunters had a flare up of diverticulitis and I had the appropriate antibiotics. I’ve sewn guides up a couple of times and passed out NSAIDS like candy. Thanks for putting this all together for me!
